Outsourcing to India - Experiment 4 - Craigslist Bangalore - Failed

Well, this lasted all of three days… yes three days. My outsourced indian assistant was given a list of tasks to do.
Day 1… he does one item, but not as I outlined it. I needed it in Google docs, he does it in Excel. No biggie.
Day 2. I ask him to connect to my machine running VNC. Four different apps and no connection. I ask him to continue on other tasks that don’t require a connection to my machine.
Day 3. I ask him to try to connect again. No success. As the ability to connect to my system is crucial (and others can connect), this doesn’t look good.
I ask him at the end of day 3 what he has done on day 2 and 3 since he was unable to connect to my machine. Other tasks were in the list on the server, but no progress seems to be done.
He quits.
He tells me that if I tripled his pay (note - he suggested his initial pay) he could get anything done, and get it done on time.
Whoah.
So the less I pay, the less he works?
He told me that he was working only for me and during the New York 9-5 shift. However, IMs could easily take 30-40 minutes to be answered.
So I ask again…
Is anyone having success in outsourcing if you aren’t a big company??
