How to succeed as a teacher - Community involvement

2. Community involvement - a bad thing.
I was president of a zoo and headed up a non-profit economic development unit as volunteer activities. Seem like a good fit for your school to have someone who can do this sort of organization and project management, determine budgets, etc.?
No, it was perceived as someone who ‘wouldnt have the time to dedicate to the school.’
I was told by one administrator that ‘the board was uncomfortable with my outside activities.’ Can someone please explain to me how working with an animal rehabilitation centre and trying to bring in new business and families to a community where the population (READ: school population) is dropping is a bad thing?
I’d often be featured on the radio with some of this work. These activities were done outside school time and did not interfere… In my opinion they give me different skills and perspective… however. I’d also not mention my external involvements at school either!
I suggest leaving this off the CV or stick to school-type ‘extracurricular activities only.’
