Goals. You need them.
Posted by admin on August 9th, 2007 filed in AdviceI’m not talking about goals on a soccer team (although you need goals too). Hell, to win in any venue, you need goals. Especially life.
The other day my wife had a yard sale. She made a lot of money for a yard sale. Afterwards she was talking about it to two of her friends. I was watching her talking about it and noticed a slightly puzzled reaction when she said. “My goal was to have made $2000, and I exceeded that goal.” What was interesting was the reactions of her friends. They asked her to repeat her statement and I could see what really threw them was the fact that she had a goal.
An objective or goal is a personal or organizational desired end point in development. It is usually endeavoured to be reached in finite time by setting deadlines. - Wikipedia
Now my wife has a fair number of goals. One of them happened to be making a certain amount of money at the yard sale. We also have certain goals in our life and we use our goals to get to where we want to be. I mentioned the puzzled look of her friends to her and we tried it on some other people.
What I noticed was that (from our highly non-scientific study) successful people set goals. People that just let things happen don’t. How can you get anywhere in life unless you set goals? The next thing you know, you are dead unless you set a goal.
One of the biggest insults to both my wife and myself is when people call us “lucky.” Oh man, does that drive me mad. We get called lucky with our jobs, our travels, everything.
Life doesn’t just happen. You need to make it happen. More on this in upcoming articles.
Lucky.. don’t insult me.
